Friends, family, neighbors, everyone: Please join us for a celebration of life and love and joy! We celebrate the power of God’s love with two baptisms, joyful music, and reflection on how God continues to draw forth new life amidst death and hope from despair. Celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and the love of God that stops at nothing, even death, to affirm the recreating power of belonging to this world!
We enter into the season of Lent (the 40 days leading up to Easter) with this meditative service including prayer, reflection, communion and the imposition of ashes. Lent is traditionally a season of spiritual practices of contemplation, generosity, prayer, and self-discipline.You may wish to embrace a spiritual practice for this season, such a fasting, or giving something up. Or perhaps you will want to take on something, or a bit of both. However you choose to observe this season, it is a reminder that God calls us into time of preparation. Change doesn't happen overnight.
Our holiday tradition continues in a new space! Join us at Kin On on Christmas Eve for an inclusive, kid-friendly service of carols, stories, and joy!
This service will be in person and livestreamed.

God is present most profoundly when suffering and grief are most intense, even in the moment of death. As we hear the story of Jesus’ final hours and death, we also reflect on the suffering and loss experienced among us this year. Our evening gathering will include contemplative music, prayers, reflection and silence.

We recall Jesus’ final meal with his friends and consider how our lives are shaped by following his example of servant leadership. We will read the story from Matthew of Jesus’ last night and reflect on it using the process of Lectio Divina: we will read the story three times in various translations, with time between each reading for quiet contemplation and shared reflection.
This service will be in-person and livestreamed.
We enter Holy Week with music, stories, and waving of branches to commemorate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The crowds who would later turn on Jesus first welcomed him, projecting onto him all their hopes for liberation. Bring your own branches to wave—any kind will do—as we step into the story of the final week of Jesus’ life.
The Season of Lent begins with an Ash Wednesday service on March 2nd. We’ll also be unveiling an updated RIC Statement, which includes our commitment to working towards and practicing racial justice.
Our Christmas Eve service is back! Family friendly with Christmas carols, sharing the story, candlelight and joy! In light of Covid challenges, in addition to our usual precautions, here are a few things to know in preparation for the service:
Joining online is the safest option. If you are uncertain about whether to come, feeling any symptoms, suspected exposure, etc. this is the time to err on the side of caution. Livestream is available on our usual Sunday Zoom link. We will do our best to make the Zoom experience as engaging and connected as possible.
Now is the time to up your mask game! We just got a giant case of surgical masks from King County Public Health to distribute. If you’re still wearing cloth masks, please take a box and wear one for worship or any time you gather in a public place. (We also have some N95s available.)
Vaccines are required for all attendees 12 and up. Instead of showing proof of vaccination, we are trusting the community to use the honor system. For the health and safety of everyone, we ask those who are not fully vaccinated (ages 12+) to join us on Zoom. Boosters are encouraged for almost everyone--please get yours if you haven’t already!
We are not celebrating communion or offering any snacks or beverages at this service. Everyone will remain fully masked at all times.
While we may not be able to maintain optimal social distancing, we will open windows for ventilation, so dress warmly!
Music will continue to be led by instrumental musicians and 1-2 vocalists. At the end of the service, we will go outside the church and gather by candlelight to sing the last two songs together (masked). You may opt for as much distance as you wish--even across the street.
If you’d like to volunteer (as a musician, greeter, reader, candle-lighter) please let us know! Email Alex at admin@columbiacityhope.org for info about open volunteer spots!
We are delighted to partner with El Centro to redevelop the entire block of Angeline St between 38th-39th to create affordable housing, high quality bilingual childcare, and a new space for our church!
Please join us on Zoom for the next community meeting to share our support for the partnership and to hear project updates. You can find updates, meeting links, and other info on their website.
This meeting will provide the following updates:
-Overall Project Design Including Scale, Facade, and Materials
-Church of Hope Design Update
-Plan for the Implementation of Art and Culture
-General Timing and Development Issues
We invite you to register for the community meeting at no cost at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/el-centro-columbia-city-community-meeting-tickets-201276392107. If you need interpretation for the meeting in Spanish, Vietnamese, Amharic, Somali or Chinese please note this when you register.
On All Saints Day, we celebrate all those who’ve gone before us, those who’ve inspired and antagonized us, the beloved and the complicated.
We also celebrate Church of Hope’s anniversary on this day, having signed our charter on All Saints’ Day 2017.
We give thanks for all who have passed through our community, and we invite you to fill the sanctuary with the memories and spirits of your beloved saints. Bring pictures and mementos--we will have space and candles and time to share the stories of all the saints and sinners whose sparks of life continue to live on in us. You’ll be able to join in-person or on Zoom, whatever method works best for you.
Please join us after service on Sunday October 17th to hear about our partnerships and goals, learn more about this upcoming year’s budget, and elect new members to the Leadership Team.
All are welcome to participate, and voting is open to anyone who wishes to express a commitment to this community.
If you want to know more about membership at Church of Hope, please email Pastor Darla at darla (at) columbiacityhope.org.

On Holy Saturday, we recall the hours that Jesus’ spent in the cold silence of the time. We will keep vigil on prayer walks on our own in our neighborhoods. You will be invited to find a labyrinth nearby or to use your own local map created in the Good Friday service to pray for the grief of your community.
This event can happen at whatever time works best for you (no need to stick to 3-4pm!) on Saturday, in whichever neighborhood you live in. This event will be self-guided and is not meant to be a large group event. Let us know if you have questions about this event by emailing Alex at admin@columbiacityhope.org.
How is God crucified among us today? After we hear the story of Jesus’ final hours and death, our service will also invite us to reflect on the suffering and loss experienced among us this year. Our reflection will guide us in creating local stations of the cross in our own neighborhoods, bearing witness to the pain of our neighbors and holding the stories of our communities in God’s sacred love and solidarity.
This service will be hosted on Zoom, using our regular Sunday Service link. Please email Alex at admin@columbiacityhope.org for Zoom access.
We recall Jesus’ final meal with his friends and consider how our lives are shaped by following his example of servant leadership. We will read the story from John 13 of how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. You may wish to reflect at home over your own meal (reflection prompts provided), or join us for Lectio Divina on Zoom: we will read the story three times in various translations, with time between each reading for quiet contemplation and shared reflection.
Email Alex at admin@columbiacityhope.org for access to the Zoom link.
Join us to celebrate the wonder and joy of Christmas Eve with a special, interactive, kid-friendly service on zoom. We will channel the energy of Church of Hope Christmas with music led by Bo Mendez, scavenger hunt activities for the kids during songs, and candles during Silent Night.
(Virtual) Holy Week at Church of Hope
Due to Governor Inslee’s stay-at-home order and subsequent ban on large gatherings, we are unable to celebrate Holy Week in person this year, but we’ve compiled a bunch of resources for you to celebrate (along with all of us!) at home.
We’ll keep it simple. We’re all swimming in internet links lately. We’ll provide a few here—particularly to the Bible texts. Explore them if you wish. But the story is enough. Start here. End here.
If you have a Bible (any translation is fine; children’s Bibles are great too), open it. Or open these links, and print them if you can.
Read the story: Aloud or silently. Alone or with others (at home or on the phone). What do you notice? What do you wonder? Read it again. How does this story connect with your life today? What might God be inviting you to do, to be, or to change?
